It Ain't Easy
Bein' Green
by Kath
Being a
newbie can be tough. You're just starting out, you don't know anyone and of
course there are all those newbie-mistakes like hot-linking images, creating
blind links in a program that doesn't allow them and using "public domain"
content
just to name a few. In order to help you avoid these pitfalls;
Adult Buzz has created this new "Newbeez" area which will be full of all sorts
of tips, tricks, codes to learn and news to know! It's everything you need in
order to graduate from newbiedom into full on webmaster as quickly as
possible!
Points to Remember -
Some of the most important
things to learn and remember about getting into the adult Internet industry are
really common sense. They can easily be broken down into 6 easy-to-remember
points:
- Network!
Education is key!
Work hard!
Be yourself!
Innovate
Everyone was a newbie at one time.
Networking -
Networking is all about
getting to know other folks in the adult Internet biz and about them getting to
know you. You can network on message boards, in chat rooms, via ICQ (or other
instant message programs) and you can get out there and meet folks at regional
conferences and International Expos. Some people communicate better in one
format than another, but whatever method you choose - make sure you use it to
your full advantage.
Start out small. Introduce yourself to the
chatroom or message board with a simple hello, a little background on yourself
and a little information on what you hope to learn/accomplish. Just as with
"real life" social situations you need to remember to be polite, take your turn
when talking and to be as good of a listener as you are a talker. Sometimes
just hanging out in a chatroom or reading a message board for a couple days
first before posting is a good way to find out who's who and what's what.
Knowing the "pecking order" of any community before putting your foot in your
mouth by insulting someone in charge or someone with lots of experience and
power is definitely a good idea.
Don't expect people to warm up to you
or give you their secrets to making money in just a few minutes. Heck, don't
ever even expect that. Earn your way into the community by becoming a part of
it. You'll be surprised at how easy it can be to make friends, learn new ideas
and exchange thoughts once you make a few friends. It can definitely enhance
your webmastering abilities and experience if you take the time out to network
and get to know other people.
Education is Key -
Even if
you've been working with HTML for years there are still things to learn. If
you've been a mainstream webmaster with a successful moneymaking site and are
just coming over to adult, then there are lots of things to learn. If you're a
successful adult webmaster who now wants to try building a first link list site
or a paysite, there are lots of things to learn. Nobody knows everything.
That's a fact.
Webmaster Resource Communities often have learning or
educational areas, weekly chats, workshops or other organized learning events.
Make sure you check into all of these to find areas that apply to what you are
trying to learn, perfect or grow into. Things like "working with niches",
"targeting your traffic", "learning PHP", "writing your first script",
"webmaster tricks", "designing a high-converting tour"; etc. can all be found
in a variety of formats throughout the top communities. You owe it to yourself
to take some time out each day or each week to learn something new. The adult
Internet industry will be changing drastically during the next couple years.
Those who can learn, grow and adapt with it will still be profitable when the
evolution is over with, those who can't - won't. It's as simple as
that.
Work Hard -
Nothing worth having comes easy, and
neither does success on the web. Some newbies come into this biz thinking all
they've got to do is to pop up a few sites, slap up some XXX content and a few
big name banners and they'll be rolling in the dough. To be honest, a few years
back it really was about that easy. But now everyone wants in the game and the
competition between freesite builders is getting fierce. Just "slapping one up"
isn't an option anymore, as you need to be concerned with search engine
rankings, conversion techniques, targeting traffic to a niche/fetish-oriented
market and a host of other important key elements. Only one thing is for
certain and that's the benefit of hard work. Work harder and smarter and you'll
come out on top.
Be Yourself -
"To thine own self be true"
is a good motto to keep, but in this instance being true not only to oneself
but also being one's true self when networking and dealing with others is
something to remember. It's pretty simple, just don't try to be something that
you're not. The Internet can give us a frightening opportunity to lie about
ourselves, but if we are truly here to do business and to make something of
ourselves then lying should not even be an option we consider.
But,
making something of yourself in a positive way IS an option. If you've always
thought of yourself as a boring, shy geek then this is your opportunity to come
out of your shell. Don't go over the top, but make yourself interesting by
learning and sharing more about the business with other, be friendly and
confident in chatrooms and on message boards. But most important you can relax
and realize that in this biz, everybody loves a geek! In fact, most successful
webmasters were geeks at one point in their lives - or still are.
So
jump in, make friends and make a positive name for yourself in your webmaster
community.
Innovate -
Along with working hard, networking
and adapting, one way you can secure yourself a place in the industry future is
to invent new ways of doing things. Everything had to start somewhere, so why
not be the creator of something that could potentially revolutionize the biz as
we know it!
A webmaster invented the first traffic links list, the
first TGP, the first pic-post, the first top list; somebody invented the first
click thru program, the first blind link and the first pop up console too!
There is no reason why you can't invent the next "big thing" if you put your
mind to it.
Everyone was a Newbie at one time -
This is
probably the most important point to remember. We were all newbies at one point
or another. To be honest, we all become newbies again every time we try to
learn something new. Whether it's going from being a freesite webmaster to a
graphics designer; a paysite owner to a webmaster sponsorship; or any other
combination of growth and learning - we are all newbies. You've got a great
history of newbies who overcame obstacles and forged new ground - become a part
of that history by learning, working hard and bringing new ideas to our
industry. And remember, when you're starting out on the bottom rung the only
way to go is UP!
