Using
the History Brush in Photoshop

In this tutorial we'll be looking at two different
ways of using the History Brush in Photoshop... Painting using a layer as a
brush and painting with a filter... Start by opening up a new image,

Now paint the background black and label
your background layer... Click Here to view Screen Shot with

Next, we're going to apply a Noise Filter, which we're
going to paint with later using the History Brush...

Now, create a new layer and paint it white
(this will make our previous effect invisible and hidden under your new
layer)... Click Here to

Go to the History Menu and set
up our History Brush... Click Here to view Screen Shot with

Return to the Layers Menu and select the brush you
want to use for your History Brush...

Now paint with your new History Brush,
you'll notice that you are now painting with the black noise we made earlier!

For the second part of this tutorial we're going to use
an image to apply the filter to...

sample we're using. Right click and Save As, saving the image to your
computer.
To make the image easier to work with, zoom in to 200%...

Apply a Sharpen Filter to the whole image...

Then, go to the History Menu and set up the
History Brush... Click

with the Sharpen Filter!
Pick the size of brush you want for your
History Brush... Click

Now, 'paint' over the
eyes and lips to 'sharpen' them...

Here's our final example comparison,

final example. You'll see that the second girl has more sparkle and
definition for her eyes and lips enhancing the image but without compromising
the quality of the rest of the picture.
Experiment by painting with
different filter effects!
