Using the History Brush in Photoshop

by BarryHilton, Adult NetSurprise

In this tutorial we'll be looking at two different ways of using the History Brush in Photoshop... Painting using a layer as a brush and painting with a filter... Start by opening up a new image, Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Now paint the background black and label your background layer... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Next, we're going to apply a Noise Filter, which we're going to paint with later using the History Brush... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Now, create a new layer and paint it white (this will make our previous effect invisible and hidden under your new layer)... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Go to the History Menu and set up our History Brush... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Return to the Layers Menu and select the brush you want to use for your History Brush... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Now paint with your new History Brush, you'll notice that you are now painting with the black noise we made earlier! Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Here's the first part of our tutorial example Click Here to view the example.

For the second part of this tutorial we're going to use an image to apply the filter to... Click Here to get the sample we're using. Right click and Save As, saving the image to your computer.

To make the image easier to work with, zoom in to 200%... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Apply a Sharpen Filter to the whole image... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Then, go to the History Menu and set up the History Brush... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions. This time we'll be painting with the Sharpen Filter!

Pick the size of brush you want for your History Brush... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Now, 'paint' over the eyes and lips to 'sharpen' them... Click Here to view Screen Shot with Instructions.

Here's our final example comparison, Click Here to view our final example. You'll see that the second girl has more sparkle and definition for her eyes and lips enhancing the image but without compromising the quality of the rest of the picture.

Experiment by painting with different filter effects!
