Tips
When using a photograph you need to select the best and most
appropriate one to get your message across. The pic and the banner wording
should work together to strongly encourage a click through. If you are
designing a banner for a bondage site then use a great bondage photo, an
obvious but essential point that needed to be made. If you haven't got your own
library of pics try and make an alliance with a good content provider. In
return for them kindly agreeing to supply you with free pics feature them boldy
on your site with a link back to their site and remember to promote them on the
boards.
If at all possible use a clear and worthwhile graphic image on
your banner. Banners that use them get better results.
Your banner must
load as quickly as possible! Keep the file size as small as you can without
losing quality. Use a graphics compression program such as
Ulead Smartsaver
Pro.
Use "Click Here" or "Join Now" or "Submit" : These phrases work
and will mean more click throughs. They work for surfers who are familiar with
banner ads where the phrase becomes subliminal and of course there are
thousands of new surfers every day who have never seen a banner before, don't
assume they know it's meant to be clicked!
If appropriate to the site
you are advertising use the word "FREE". Everybody loves a Freebie! Perhaps
combine "FREE" with "Click Here" ie. "Click Here - It's FREE" or perhaps "FREE
Membership : Click Here Now!"
Choose a font that echoes and gives the
feel of the web site you are designing the banner for. For example a gothic
font might suit a certain type of bondage site. Make sure it's very easy to
read!
Keep your banner design free from clutter. If it's cluttered the
message will not get across quickly enough. Surfer assimilation time is a click
through lost, if they need to puzzle it out you have designed a useless
banner!
A short and clear message gets results!
Don't take any
notice of "what colors work best for banners" tips! they mean nothing when
designing adult banners! You need to use the best colors that match the site
you are designing the banner for. For example most "what colors work best for
banners" tips say red is bad but with adult banners red means sex! I'm not
saying use red, I'm not going to suggest any color is better than any other
color, just use what suits the particular site better than any other
color.
Be original! Don't be lazy. Don't charge so little for your
banner design that all you are able to do is pump 'em out as fast as you can in
order to scratch a meagre living. In the long run who will thank you, who will
re-order. As a professional designer your job is to make the banner work to
it's optimum for your client and when they see the best results coming from
your designs they'll come back for more! Are you sure enough of your banner
design skills to ask your clients for feedback on their effectiveness? If not
why not?
Make use of humor, it's a very powerful tool! Make someone
smile and they are much more likely to make a click through! Try drawing a
cartoon or think up a really funny phrase.
