Designing Arrows in Photoshop 6
by JohnHilton, Adult NetSurprise
In days of yore designing
arrows was a difficult task. It's still not that easy to produce a shape that
uses triangles in Photoshop but at least there are plenty of options for
creating a mulitude of different shaped arrows (and these can be adapted for
triangles).
The Line Tool has an Arrowheads facility which can be
accessed via the Geometry Options (Click the little black arrow) on the options
bar. The menu is shown on the left of the first graphic below. As you can see
you can alter the arrowhead shape by adjusting the width and length. You can
also make the arrowhead concave and adjust the amount. There are options to
draw the arrowhead at the start or end of the line. If you wish you can also
apply a Layer Style which adds a huge range of possibilities.
The Custom
Shape Tool initially has a choice of two arrow designs (add six extra ones by
loading them into the Custom Shape Picker (Click little black arrow in circle
on drop down menu and choose Load Shapes. You will get a lot more than just
arrows!). Using the Custom Shape Options, shown below, you can vary the size
and proportions of your arrow. Try them all out to see what effect they have. I
find it handy to check 'From Center' since it makes it easier to place the
arrow exactly where you want. Of course you can further enhace your arrow
design by applying Layer Styles.
The second graphic shows some arrows
that were designed using either the line tool or the custom shape tool. This is
a tiny selection. As you can imagine the possibilities are endless!
Why
use a boring arrow when you can create a killer one and who cares anyway? Every
part of a design is important and should be carefully considered since each
part adds to the overall look!
