Designing a Logo: Part Five
Using our basic links that we designed last week we are going to make a realistic looking chain for our logo to enhance the 'Bondage' feel for our site...

This week we will duplicate our chain link layers many times and use the 'Rotate' tool to rotate each link in our chain to make a realistic looking chain for our logo.

The first thing we need to do is make our starting point for our chain. In our example logo we want our chain to run under our 'BONDAGE' text from left to right. We will start on the left and work round to the right.

Last week we created our two basic links you will notice from your layers menu that the layer named 'Flat Link' is above our 'Round Link' layer. It is important that our links are positioned this way as we want to add some effects to our chain link later...

To start our chain we need to select the 'Flat Link' layer. To do this just click on the 'Flat Link' layer on the 'Layers' menu.

Then click on your image and drag your 'Flat Link' to the left side of your 'BONDAGE' text and position it slightly below the middle.

Now we want to rotate your 'Flat Link' to nearly vertical. To do this go to the 'Edit' menu at the top of the screen, select 'Transform' then 'Rotate' from the new menu. This will bring up a small box surrounding your 'Flat Link'. The box has a smaller box on each corner and in the center of each face. To rotate your layer move your cursor over your image and you will see a small round arrow... Then click on a corner of the box surrounding your link and drag left or right to rotate your link to nearly vertical. When you are happy click on the 'Move' tool and then 'Apply' on the warning message that appears. To see our example click here.

Now we want to repeat the procedure with our 'Round Link'. Click on the 'Round Link' Layer to select it and follow the instructions as per rotating our 'Flat Link' but this time position your 'Round Link below your 'Flat Link' and slightly overlapping and rotated a little more to the right. Now we want to start adding more links to our chain so click on the 'Flat Link' layer to select it. Then right click and select the 'Duplicate Layer' option This will create a new layer named ' Flat Link copy'. Then follow the instructions as per above to move and rotate your new 'Flat Link copy' layer to the right and slightly overlapping your 'Round Link' layer.

Next you want to do the same with your 'Round Link' layer... Click your 'Round Link' layer to select it. Then right click and select the 'Duplicate Layer' option This will create a new layer named ' Round Link copy'. Then follow the instructions as per above to move and rotate your new 'Round Link copy' layer to the right and slightly overlapping your 'Flat Link' layer. To see our example click here.

Keep on repeating this by alternately copying and rotating your 'Round Link' and 'Flat Link' layers until you have made a chain that goes around the bottom of your 'BONDAGE' text and up the right hand side link our example. To see our complete chain click here.

Now we want to add some effects to our chain to make it realistic... To do this select your very first 'Round Link' layer by clicking on the layer name in the 'Layer' menu. Then right click on this layer and select 'Effects' from the menu.

The 'Effects' menu will appear... This time we want to add two effects to our 'Round Link'... First a drop shadow... Make sure you have 'Drop Shadow' selected and 'Apply' ticked. Then enter the following, Mode 'Multiply', Opacity '75', Angle tick the 'Use Global Angle' box which should give you a value of 135, Distance 2, Blur 3, Intensity 0.

Now while still using this menu change 'Drop Shadow' to 'Bevel and Emboss'. Tick the 'Apply' box and enter the following values... Highlight: Mode 'Screen', Opacity 75. Shadow: Mode 'Multiply', Opacity 75. Style 'Inner Bevel', Angle tick the 'Use Global Angle' box, Depth 5, Blur 1 and Up selector marked.

Then click OK! This will give you a realistic looking round chain link! To see our example click here.

We have used the 'Drop Shadow' to make our chain have a 3d look when these effects are added to each of our links.

Now we want to apply the same 'Effect' to all our chain... The easiest way to do this is to go to the 'Layer' menu at the top of the screen, select 'Effects' then 'Copy Effects' from the menu that appears.

Now we want to 'Link' all our chain layers to our 'Round Link' layer where we make our effects. To do this click in the closest box to the left of each layer (The empty box next to the 'Eye'). Do this for all the layers in our chain so they are all linked to our 'Round Link' layer.

Then go back to the 'Round Link' layer and right click on the layer name. To copy your effects to all the other links in your chain just select 'Copy Effects to Linked' from the menu. To see our completed chain example click here.

This week's To-Do Assignment:
Follow this weeks tutorial and complete your chain across the bottom of your logo... You will now need to save your image as a jpg. To do this flatten your image file by clicking on the 'Layer' menu at the top of the screen and selecting 'Flatten Image'... DON'T FORGET TO SAVE YOUR IMAGE AS A PSD FILE FIRST... Then from the 'File' menu at the top of the screen choose 'Save As'. This will bring up the jpg compression menu, set the compression to 7 or 8 and click OK to save your image.
