Designing a Logo: Part Four
We want to add a chain to our logo to enhance our 'Bondage' feel for our site, so this week you will learn how to make a simple ellipse chain link and a flat chain link...

First we need to make new layer under our 'BONDAGE' text layer but above our 'Red Logo Border' layer. Photoshop always creates a new layer above the layer you have selected so click on your 'Red Logo Border' and then click the 'New Layer' button at the bottom of the 'Layers' menu. Then double click on this new layer and rename it 'Round Link'.

Now we need to use the 'Ellipse Marquee' tool that we used last week... If you don't remember how to select this just click and hold with your left mouse button on the 'Marquee' tool then choose the 'Ellipse Marquee' from the menu that appears by releasing your mouse button.

We want to make our round chain link... To do this we need to choose 'Fixed Size' from the 'Style' selector located on the 'Marquee Options' menu. Enter values of... Width 28, Height 20.

Click on your image to make our 'Ellipse Marquee' appear on your new layer. Now select a mid grey color from the 'Swatches' menu and fill your Marquee.

Now we have a flat disk but we need to make our chain link... To do this we first need to make a smaller 'Ellipse Marquee'. Go to the 'Marquee Options' menu and enter values of 18 for Width and 12 for Height. Notice we have reduced these values by 8 pixels as we want to make a chain link made from 4 pixel wide metal.

We want to delete the middle of our flat disk to make our first chain link... You may need to zoom in on our image using the 'Zoom' tool. So select the 'Zoom' tool and click 4 times on the flat disk on your image to zoom to 500% size.

Now select the 'Ellipse Marquee' tool again and click on your image. You need to move the marquee into the center of your flat disk. To do this either click and hold inside your marquee and drag the marquee to a new position. To make a fine adjustment you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move your marquee 1 pixel at a time to make sure you have the marquee centered on your flat disk.

When you are happy that your marquee is in the center of your flat disk press Delete on your keyboard... Now we have a small chain link! To see our example click here.

Now we need to create our flat chain link... First create a new layer, click on the 'New Layer' button at the bottom of the 'Layers' menu. Double click on this layer and rename your layer 'Flat Link'.

To create our flat link you need to combine three marquee shapes... First you need to select the normal 'Marquee', if you have the 'Ellipse Marquee' selected click and hold the 'Ellipse Marquee' tool and select the 'Marquee' tool from the menu.

Now go to the 'Marquee Options' menu and enter values for Width of 22 and Height of 4. Click on your image to make your the marquee on your 'Flat Link' layer.

Zoom in further by selecting the 'Zoom' tool and clicking 5 times on the marquee on your image to zoom to 1200% size.

Change your 'Marquee' back to an 'Ellipse Marquee' by clicking and holding on the 'Marquee' tool and selecting the 'Ellipse Marquee' from the menu.

Now go to the 'Marquee Options' menu and change the values for Width to 4 and Height to 4.

We want to add our circular marquee, 4 pixels diameter, to our rectangular marquee that we made earlier so... Move your cursor over your image and hold down the shift key on your keyboard, you will notice that a small + sign appears on the bottom right of your marquee crosshairs. Keep your shift button pressed and click and drag your round marquee to the left end of your rectangular marquee so that it fits centrally on the end. To see our example click here.

Now repeat the above to add a round end onto the right side of your marquee... To see our example click here.

If you do not already have a mid grey foreground color selected... Select a mid grey color from the 'Swatches' menu and fill your Marquee. To see our example click here.

Now to reduce your zoom back to normal just click the 'Zoom' tool and hold Alt on your keyboard... while holding Alt click on your image to reduce your zoom by 100%, keep clicking until your image is at the normal size of 100%.

Now you will have the basics of our chain, next week we will add more links to our chain and make a realistic looking metallic effect!

This week's To-Do Assignment:
Follow this weeks tutorial and make both a round chain link and a flat chain link... You will now need to save your image as a jpg. To do this flatten your image file by clicking on the 'Layer' menu at the top of the screen and selecting 'Flatten Image'... DON'T FORGET TO SAVE YOUR IMAGE AS A PSD FILE FIRST... Then from the 'File' menu at the top of the screen choose 'Save As'. This will bring up the jpg compression menu, set the compression to 7 or 8 and click OK to save your image.
