Photoshop 5 Course Part 3
by BarryHilton, Adult NetSurprise
Designing a Logo: Part
Three This week we will add more effects to our logo to make a complex
and interesting design fit for your website!

 |
We want to add some rivets to our text logo to make it
more interesting and more suitable for our 'Bondage' website.
First we
need to design our rivet... Click and hold the 'Marquee' tool and a small menu
will appear, while still holding your mouse button move over the 'Ellipse
Marquee' icon and release to select it.
Then go to the 'Marquee Options'
menu and change 'Style' to 'Fixed Size'. Then enter 4 in the width and height
boxes this will make your 'Ellipse Marquee' 4 pixels round.
Click on
your image and you will see a small round 'Marquee' 4 pixels in
diameter. |
 |
We want to create a new layer for our rivet... At the
bottom of the 'Layers' menu is a little symbol (Shown on the left), just click
this to add a new layer. Double click on this layer to bring up the 'Layer
Options' menu and change the name to 'Rivet'. |

 |
Now select a mid grey from the 'Swatches' menu and use
the 'Paint' tool to fill your rivet with your selected color.
To make
our little circle look like a rivet we need to apply a bevel effect... Right
click on the 'Rivet' layer and choose 'Effects'. From the 'Effects' menu that
appears select 'Bevel and Emboss', make sure that no other effects have 'Apply'
checked.
Select the following 'Highlight' mode 'Screen' and 75%
'Opacity'... 'Shadow' mode 'Multiply' and 75% 'Opacity'... 'Style' Inner Bevel,
'Angel' 135, 'Depth' 5, 'Blur' 1. Click OK and your text will have a bevelled
rivet! Click here
to see our example, our little rivet is in the button left corner of our
B. |
 |
Now you need to duplicate this rivet many times, place
each rivet on a suitable corner of each of your letters. To duplicate your
rivet right click on the layer 'Rivet' and choose 'Duplicate Layer' from the
menu and click OK.
To move your rivet to a new location select the
'Move' tool and click on your image near your rivet and drag it to a new
position. To get fine control over where your rivet is placed you can use the
arrow keys on your keyboard to move the rivet one pixel at a
time.
Repeat this step as many times as you need to achieve a realistic
effect! To see our example
Click
here. |
 |
Now we have lots of layers! To make our image layers
more manageable we can merge our rivets so they are all on one layer... First
you need to make all the layers apart from your rivets invisible. To do this
click on the 'Eye' icon next to each layer. When you have done this only your
rivets will be visible. To see what this should look like
Click
here.
To merge the rivets on to the same layer click your first
layer named 'Rivet' . Then select the 'Layer' menu at the top of the screen and
choose 'Merge Layers'. All your rivets will then be on one layer!
Now
make your other layers visible again by clicking the little box to the left of
the layers where the 'Eye' was before... the 'Eye' will appear again and your
layers will be visible. |
This week's To-Do
Assignment: Follow this weeks tutorial and add rivets to your logo,
after this merge your rivets into one layer and save your psd file. You will
now need to save your image as a jpg. To do this flatten your image file by
clicking on the 'Layer' menu at the top of the screen and selecting 'Flatten
Image'... DON'T FORGET TO SAVE YOUR IMAGE AS A PSD FILE FIRST... Then from the
'File' menu at the top of the screen choose 'Save As'. This will bring up the
jpg compression menu, set the compression to 7 or 8 and click OK to save your
image.
