INTRODUCTION & PURPOSES

Welcome to Newbie Project #6. This project is designed to explain and get your feet wet in the building of TopList Sites. If you have already built free sites you already have some of the basics down. Yet, even if this is your first site this project will get you headed in the right direction. However, being that a toplist site has to do with manipulation of traffic. One should have already had a little site building experience and a basic knowledge and understanding of ones traffic to obtain the most benefit from a toplist site.

There can be many functions, uses, and purposes for a toplist site. Yet, in it's basic form a toplist site is used for "trading traffic". Meaning that a toplist site can be a excellent way to trade a non-buying surfer of yours off for a new surfer from a toplist. And not only that, but when your toplist are picked out and matched correctly you can generate many more surfers back TO your site than you are sending OUT. This would be considered the proper way a toplist site should work. Getting more hits back than you are sending out.

Now, having said all that let's take a look into the building of a toplist site. As was stated if you have already done free sites then you are one step ahead. The difference however being that with a toplist site we are wanting to send some traffic "OUT" to the toplist in order to get and keep the listings and get new surfers back from them. This starts with link positioning inside your toplist site. There can be various ways of doing this. Yet, the main point still remains that you'll want to send some of your traffic OUT. Keeping links to a minimum is of benefit also. To many links out will mean that your outgoing traffic will be to spread out and no one place or the other may get many clicks out. Therefore it may reflect negatively toward the outcome you wish to achieve. Providing "yourself" a link within the toplist links can be a benefit as well. Remember that with a toplist site, you are moving out non-buying surfers somewhere else. That can not only be a toplist but can also be a "trap" page of your own. Do you see some possibities here?

Below are various examples of TopList sites. You will see that there can be various ways to do them and "your" toplist site can be catered to "your" specific needs.
