Photoshop 5 Course Part 7
by BarryHilton, Adult NetSurprise
Designing a Logo: Part
Seven This week we add 'Virgins' text to our logo and use the 'Ploygonal
Lasso' to adjust the position of each letter the text to just where we want
it!
 |
The first step is to create our 'Virgin' Text. We need
the text below our chain so click on your 'Background' layer (the very bottom
layer). Then select the 'Text' tool from the 'Tool' menu.
We are going
to use a red color for our text so go to the 'Swatches' menu and click on 'red'
in the top left corner. This will change your 'Foreground' color to
red!
For our 'Virgin' Text we want to use a hand written type font, in
our example we will use a font called 'KianasHand' . Click inside your image to
bring up the 'Text' menu, type 100 for the size in pixels and -120 for the
tracking.
Now type 'Virgins'. |
 |
If your text is not positioned approximately in the
middle of your chain and in a position where you can still read the text easily
you will need to select the 'Move' tool from the 'Tool' menu. Then click on
your image and drag your text to a more suitable position. To see our example

 |
Next we want to 'fine tune' our text positioning. To do
this you will first need to render your text: Right click on the 'T' shown on
the right of your text layer on the Layer' menu and select 'Render Layer' from
the menu.
Now you will need to select the 'Polygonal Lasso' tool rom the
'Tool' menu, if you do not see this symbol click and hold on the 'Lasso' tool
and select the 'Ploygonal Lasso' from the menu.
Then, starting with our
'i', use the 'Polygonal Lasso' to surround your letter. To do this click on
your image at your starting point, it's a good idea to start in the top left
just above your 'i'. Then move your mouse and a line will stretch from where
you clicked to your curser, click again a little above the top right of your
'i'. Again, move your mouse and a line will extend from where you last clicked.
Repeat this process until you have surrounded your 'i' with a 'Marquee'. When
you need to finish your last line, the one that joins your first click, just
double click and the 'Marquee' will automatically complete. When you are
drawing your 'Marquee' with the 'Polygonal Lasso' tool make sure that you do
not overlap any part of another letter! To see our example of our 'i'
click
here.
When you have your 'i' slected you can drag it to a new
position using the 'Move' Tool. When you are happy with your 'i' postion repeat
the process with your 'r' and continue with each letter until your text is well
spaced and each letter is easy to read. To see our example

This week's To-Do
Assignment: Follow this weeks tutorial and add 'Virgin' text to your
logo... You will now need to save your image as a jpg. To do this flatten your
image file by clicking on the 'Layer' menu at the top of the screen and
selecting 'Flatten Image'... DON'T FORGET TO SAVE YOUR IMAGE AS A PSD FILE
FIRST... Then from the 'File' menu at the top of the screen choose 'Save As'.
This will bring up the jpg compression menu, set the compression to 7 or 8 and
click OK to save your image.
