Sporting a Winning Attitude!

by TDavid, TDScripts.com

I had to chuckle this morning when my son was telling his mother, "I don't want to wear the Seahawks shirt to school, they suck right now." After gently correcting him that she didn't think it was very nice to say that the Seahawks "suck", I politely corrected her by indicating that right now at 1 win and 5 losses, yes, they do suck.

I asked him what team he wanted to wear and he said the Green Bay Packers who are out to a 6 wins and 1 loss start. The cheeseheads are hot, led by quarterback Brett Favre who has started 164 consecutive games, an incredible NFL record and accomplishment. He got his knee banged up in the last game and had to be taken out for the first time in a game in like 2 years and there was doubt that he might break his streak of consecutive starts. As I was driving around yesterday I heard on the radio that, as you might have guessed, he'll be starting the next game. The truth is that Brett wanted to go back into the game when he was still injured.

Got to love a guy with that kind of attitude and drive. A true winner.

Business and sports have a lot to do with each other. If you have a winning attitude, winning people on your team, a scorching desire to never give up, you are going to win more than you are going to lose. If you mope around and fight among each other, complain ceaselessly on various boards about how you can't get any signups, new Visa regulations, getting screwed by someone or something, then you are inviting negativity into your domain (pardon the pun).

A little venting once in awhile is fine, but if you can find a positive solution for your venting, it's always better than using a negative one. Consider setting up your own venting outlet. I have a venting outlet and it's called C-Munk http://c-munk.scriptschool.com/ Maybe you've heard of C-Munk at Script School, because he is our mascot. C-Munk hates almost everything, and yet still has a unique love for life. C-Munk's views on the world are usually so dramatically negative that they become humorous. So what positive does all that bottled, overdriven negativity in a helium-type voice (attempt to) do? Make someone smile. It's a positive, and satirical way to get rid of tension. Sometimes it helps to have some sort of comic relief when you are dealing with technology and scripting issues. So create your own negative energy outlet whether it be music, sports, whatever and exhale.

Just get rid of that negative energy before it swirls around and engulfs you.

Positive energy, now how do you get ahold of that? That's the key. Finding an area to interact with webmasters which is professional and positive. Some will say that these type of boards and places are boring, and perhaps they are boring to those who find pleasure in pain, negativity, but I can assure you that a day spent with people moaning, groaning and fighting is less likely to make you more productive. Negativity saps the lifeforce inside all of us. So find folks with positive energy. Usually people who are newer to the business and not as likely to have developed unflinching ideas and ideals. Seek out those newbieboards and read what the newbies are saying. Their energy about writing html, coming up with new ideas are contagious.

And a word on streaks like the one Brett Favre has going. I'm sure he didn't set out to start a streak, he just had an attitude that he wanted to play every chance he got to play. Do you have an attitude like this? Do you want to work every *work* day? Note that I didn't say work every day. I don't believe that winners work every day, winners work hard, play hard and rest hard. They know that rest is just as important to staying fresh and helping them win. Losers will work all the time or in gigantic spurts of activity and then get burned out or sick so that they must take time off. Winners pace themselves, plan and organize, where losers typically do not.

So you too can start a streak by doing something consistent every day. Maybe this is posting to your favorite messageboard one time every work day. Maybe it is attending every Internext convention. Maybe it is building a free site or AVS, whatever it is, a streak starts by doing something consistently. Again, that's what winners do, they do things consistently, positively.

You've probably heard or read that winners never quit. I think winners will see failures and take that as experience. There clearly comes a time when energy in a project needs to be refocused, but quitting altogether? Losers accept that they can't do something, they believe it's impossible for them to get past the obstacles set before them. Winners and losers both dream, it's just that the former refuses to deny that dreams do come true.

Take a cup of your favorite beverage and pull away periodically and honestly, objectively analyze your business. Get out a pen and paper and make two columns. Label one "Positive" and the other "Negative" and then seriously list the specific things you are doing on a daily basis in your business. When you are done creating this list, try and think of ways to turn the negatives into positives. The time-wasting, wheel spinning projects into time productive, move forward projects.

Let's say you write: "not making money" -- that's too broad. It is better to write something like: "amateur tgp galleries I'm building aren't generating sales" Then you say to yourself, hmmm, ok, where do I find out more about amateurs? Do I know anybody who actually runs an amateur site? Where can I ask someone who runs these type sites to look over my galleries and generate feedback about them? Do my sites appeal to those who are looking for amateur content?

Turn a negative on your list into a positive by attacking the problem and finding the solution.

The innocence of children is often wiser than adults being politically correct in that they say exactly what they feel without any idea that their honesty is anything but reality. When my son said the Seahawks suck, he was being as honest and factual as he could be. He didn't want to walk around school and advertise a team that were losers. Perhaps that's brutal if you are a Seahawk fan, but that's how the majority of people behave; they don't want to associate with losers.

I'm absolutely certain that the only way the Seahawks will get better is to develop a winning attitude as a foundation. It isn't going to happen as long as the coach yells at them and they fight among each other. The only difference between my son and them as far as uniforms go is that they don't have a choice -- they must wear the uniform.

We don't have a choice either -- we are our websites, our respective businesses. By making sure that we give off more positive than negative energy, we increase the likelihood that good things can and will happen, and that we'll develop a winning record.
